🏁 What exactly is triathlon?

Triathlon was born in the early 1970s in California πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ, where a few enthusiasts had the idea of combining a swim 🏊, bike 🚴, and run πŸƒ to take on a new challenge. This simple concept quickly gained popularity before spreading worldwide and becoming an Olympic sportOlympic rings in 2000.

Over the years, triathlon built a reputation as an extreme sport, mainly due to long distances like the IronmanIronman. However, that image is only a small part of reality. The vast majority of triathlons are designed to be accessible to beginners, with distances suited for all levels.

Yes, you need to be in decent physical shape and plan a bit of training, but you don't need to be an elite athlete to enjoy the experience. What makes triathlon so special is the joy of stringing together three different disciplines, taking on a personal challenge at your own pace, and crossing a finish line 🏁 you will remember for a long time.

With a bit of preparation, anyone can do it πŸ…!

There are several formats tailored to everyone's goals:

🌱 Getting started: Discovery / Try-a-Tri

🏊 375m β€’ 🚴 10km β€’ πŸƒ 2.5km

The perfect format to give it a try hassle-free, at your own pace, and in a welcoming atmosphere.

πŸš€ Once comfortable: Sprint & Olympic

⏱️ Sprint: 750m / 20km / 5km  |  πŸ… Olympic: 1500m / 40km / 10km

Two classic formats ideal as soon as you gain confidence to structure your progression.

ℹ️ For your curiosity: There are also (very) long distance formats (Half-Ironman and full Ironman). While they impress the general public, they only represent a fraction of triathlon. Each distance has its own charm!

❓ Frequently asked questions for beginners

Search for a topic, use category filters, or click on a question to reveal the answer.

1. What are the distances in triathlon?
↳ How long does it take? ↳ Is there a time limit?
β–Ό

The different distances:

  • Try-a-Tri / Discovery: ~375 m swim β€’ 10 km bike β€’ 2.5 km run (ideal for beginners)
  • Sprint: 750 m swim β€’ 20 km bike β€’ 5 km run
  • Olympic (Standard): 1.5 km swim β€’ 40 km bike β€’ 10 km run
  • Half-Ironman (70.3): 1.9 km swim β€’ 90 km bike β€’ 21.1 km run
  • Ironman (140.6): 3.8 km swim β€’ 180 km bike β€’ 42.2 km run

How long does it take?

  • Discovery: Between 45 min and 1 h 15
  • Sprint: Between 1 h 15 and 2 h 00
  • Olympic: Between 2 h 30 and 3 h 45

Time limits (cut-offs):

Most events enforce time limits (cut-offs) for safety reasons. However, on Discovery and Sprint formats, these limits are very generous and allow you to walk if needed.

2. When can I wear a wetsuit? Is it mandatory?
β–Ό

A neoprene wetsuit is not mandatory, unless the water temperature is below 15.9 Β°C (60.8 Β°F).

Usually, it is permitted up to 22 Β°C (71.6 Β°F), depending on your age category, distance, and air temperature. Above that threshold, it becomes prohibited to prevent overheating.

πŸ’‘ Good to know: The official decision regarding wetsuit rules is made by race officials exactly 1 hour before the start.

3. I am less comfortable swimming, can I receive help?
↳ Am I allowed to wear a swim buoy?
β–Ό

Support and safety:

  • Distinctive swim cap: Specially colored swim caps are often provided to beginners so lifeguards can keep a closer eye on them.
  • Resting: You can hold onto a lifeguard's kayak to catch your breath. As long as the vessel does not move you forward, you are not disqualified.

Rules on swim buoys:

Deployed open-water buoys are prohibited. Only compact emergency buoys (manually inflatable at the waist) are permitted, but deploying them ends your race.

4. What is the mandatory equipment for a triathlon?
β–Ό

The rules dictate a minimum set of safety and identification gear for each leg:

πŸŠβ€β™‚οΈ Swim:

  • Swim cap: Mandatory, usually provided by the event organizers.
  • Swimsuit or trisuit: Mandatory.

  • Running shoes: Mandatory.
  • Bib number: Worn on the front of the body, clearly visible.
  • Covered torso: Shirt or zipped-up trisuit.

❗ SAFETY REMINDER

Headphones, earphones, mobile phones, and glass containers are strictly prohibited under penalty of immediate disqualification.

5. What type of bike do I need to participate?
β–Ό

Any traditional bike works: road bike, hybrid, mountain bike, or city bike. The only rule is that the bike must be powered solely by human force.

❌ Electric-assist bikes (E-bikes) are prohibited.

6. Do I need to train a lot for my first triathlon?
β–Ό

For a first Discovery triathlon, about 1 month of training consisting of one 30-minute session per sport per week (3 short sessions/week) is more than enough to cross the finish line with a smile!

🌱 Getting started: Discovery / Try-a-Tri

🏊 375m β€’ 🚴 10km β€’ πŸƒ 2.5km

The perfect format to try without complications, at your pace, and in a supportive environment.
